Visitor Center at Hunmanaya Tangalle (2008)
The building consist of a main exhibition space and additional facility for the maintenance staff, located about 400m away from the main attraction, the site is placed at the end of a narrow winding foot path, the site capturing the view of the sea. The inspiration to the design is derived from the main attraction itself, ‘The Blowhole’ a natural phenomenon of a splendid fountain of sea spray created due to the pressure built up underneath the rocks in the sea.
The organic structure utilizes shell construction techniques. The concrete roof is carried by a portal frame which transfers the loads to the ground. The main gallery space exhibiting artifacts and craft products is housed under the unique shell roof structure.
